2016 is undoubtedly a success at Nyetimber, the ripeness and the body of this small, frost-affected vintage filling out the naturally delicate style without disrupting it. This 2016 Blanc de Blancs is accordingly one of the strongest blanc de blancs I have tasted here, helped along by a slightly longer lees-aging period than the cuvée normally boasts (as well as the seemingly slightly broader character that the Chardonnay from greensand soils, heavily featured here, brings to this cuvée). Lemon jam, sweet almond and pear tart flavors are framed in some salty-butter richness, with a little citrus-peel grip adding a subtle sense of substance. There's an understated density to the fruit here, which plays long and fine through a balanced, friendly dosage and integrated acidity. - Tom Hewson
Nyetimber Classic Cuvée Brut Blanc de Blancs 2016 is a pure Chardonnay sparkling wine from the estate’s finest chalk-rich vineyards in West Sussex, England. Budburst occurred in mid-April, followed by an advection frost on 28th April that caused significant bud damage and delayed vine development. Once flowering was completed, a long, warm summer allowed the grapes to develop nicely, resulting in excellent quality despite overall low yields. Harvest took place from 12th to 24th October. Fermented and aged in a combination of stainless steel and oak with extended lees contact of approximately five years, the 2016 vintage displays a mellow golden colour with delicate mousse. It offers layered aromas of lemon, white blossom, baked apple, peach and toasted brioche, evolving into notes of shortbread and subtle vanilla. A refined and elegant Blanc de Blancs with creamy texture, bright minerality and excellent length that showcases the purity and potential of English Chardonnay.
