The 2021 Spirit of Place Shiraz hails from 103-year-old vines in the Barossa Valley. Aromatically, it leads with masses of black berry fruit, cherry, licorice, dark chocolate and star anise. In the mouth, the wine is inky and thick, the tannins embedded so deeply into the fruit that it is a challenge to determine where they start and finish. It is undeniably excellent, with black, silty tannins that settle, rather the inhibit. This comes from Ebenezer in Barossa, planted in 1918. It's an astounding wine. - Erin Larkin, April 2025

Description

Spirit of Place 2021 comes from a single 100+‑year‑old Shiraz vineyard in Ebenezer, at the northern end of the Barossa, hand‑cultivated since 1918. In the 2021 season one block stood out for its remarkable quality, inspiring this cuvée as a pure expression of the site’s red‑brown clay soils and century of viticultural history. The wine shows dense blackberry and dark plum with violet, licorice and warm spice, underpinned by savoury, earthy notes. Full‑bodied and concentrated yet finely shaped, it offers a deep core of dark fruit, fresh acidity and ripe, polished tannins leading to a long, savoury finish. Presented in a broad‑shouldered, wax‑sealed bottle that echoes old hand‑blown grands crus, it’s a characterful, collectible Barossa Shiraz.
