Owned by winemaker Tegan Passalacqua since 2012, this site was planted in 1915 on white sand soils on limestone bedrock. The 2022 Zinfandel Kirschenmann Vineyard opens with a slight reduction that gives way to ripe wild berries, dried orange peel, potpourri and tea leaves after significant aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, plump and quite generous at this stage, leading to an elegant, sweet-fruited and floral finish that begins on an evasive note but swells and builds in amplitude over time. Given the initial reduction and performance of the finish, this should benefit significantly from 2-3 years in bottle. It includes Mondeuse Noire, Carignan and Cinsault. - Matthew Luczy
Turley Kirschenmann Vineyard Zinfandel 2022 comes from historic own-rooted, head-trained and dry-farmed vines planted in 1915 on silica-rich sandy soils over limestone bedrock in the Mokelumne River AVA of Lodi, California. This classic old-vine field blend consists primarily of Zinfandel with small interplanted amounts of Mondeuse, Cinsault and Carignane. Fermented with native yeasts and aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels, the 2022 vintage is potent, perfumed and incredibly deep. It offers vibrant aromas of ripe wild berries, raspberry, blackberry, dried orange peel, potpourri, tea leaves, white pepper and subtle earthy spice. On the palate it is medium-bodied, plump and generous with silky smooth tannins, bright acidity, elegant sweet fruit and a long, floral finish. A complex and dynamic old-vine Zinfandel that beautifully showcases the purity, vibrancy and distinctive sandy terroir of the Kirschenmann Vineyard.
