96 Points - Antonio Galloni Vinous

The 2021 Treinspoor is Sadie's Tinta Barocca that man himself likens to Nebbiolo, also opining that it is a wine that needs considerable ageing. These vines were planted in 1974, and the blend includes 40% whole clusters. It has a complex, succinctly defined bouquet with melted tar and graphite infused dark berry fruit, a hint of lapsang Souchong. the palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, perfectly-tuned acidity, almost Burgundian in texture yet with more pepperiness towards the finish. So elegant and harmonious - this stunning from every angle you look at it - Neal Martin

Description

The 2021 Treinspoor from The Sadie Family Wines is sourced from old bush vines planted in 1974 in Swartland’s Western Cape, grown on decomposed granite and gravel soils. It’s a pure expression of Tinta Barroca, crafted with partial whole clusters and aged in old oak and concrete to preserve site character.

Aromatically, it shows spicy, earthy, and mineral notes, layered with graphite, slate, and dark berry fruit like blackcurrant and plum. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, muscular yet refined, with gripping tannins, fresh acidity, and flavors of dark cherry, spiced plum, and subtle florals.

Despite its power, the wine carries a precise, almost Burgundian texture, finishing long with peppery spice and a distinctive stony, graphite edge. Built for aging, it will evolve complexity and elegance over time.
