A blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Keyneton Euphonium beautifully marries the mint and herb of the Bordeaux varieties with the plumminess and spice of the Shiraz. Hints of mint, tea and violets accent dark, plummy fruit, then finish with savory overtones of black olive. It's full-bodied and supple, ready to drink now or age 15 or more years. - Joe Czerwinski, May 2020

Description

Keyneton Euphonium 2016 is Henschke’s classic Barossa blend, named after the family brass band and the B‑flat euphonium once played in the village of Keyneton. Sourced from 50‑year‑old vineyards on grey/brown clays, red‑brown earth and sandy loams over gravel and bedrock, it combines 57% Shiraz, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. Fermented in traditional open‑top concrete tanks and matured for 18 months in a mix of French and American hogsheads (around 20% new), it shows deep crimson colour with garnet hues and enticing aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and cassis wrapped in notes of sage, bay leaf, red fruits, black pepper, vanilla and cedar. The palate is generous and layered, with rich red and blackcurrant, dried herbs and pepper, great purity and balance, and a silky, complex mouthfeel; velvety tannins carry a long, satisfying finish. Vegan‑friendly and well suited to both current drinking and mid‑term cellaring.
