The 2022 Henry's Seven leads with a vibrant core of raspberry seed and bramble, five spice and blood plum skin. In the mouth, the fruit is supple and spicy and expounds a brilliant clarity of tannin. Ductile, whippy and delicious, it has raspberry leaf tea and rose petals to close. There are also notes of pink peppercorns, as per usual. This is a gorgeous wine. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. - Erin Larkin September 2023

Description

Henry’s Seven 2022 is Henschke’s tribute to Henry Evans, who planted the first vineyard at Keyneton in 1853, highlighting the early introduction of southern French and Spanish varieties to the Barossa. Sourced from multiple Eden Valley and Barossa Valley vineyards on mixed grey/brown clays, red‑brown earth and sandy loams, it blends 72% Shiraz, 15% Grenache, 11% Mataro and 2% Viognier. Viognier is co‑fermented with Shiraz in traditional open‑top concrete tanks; Grenache and Mataro are fermented separately, then the wine is matured for 10 months in 10% new and 90% seasoned French hogsheads.

Deep garnet with violet hues, it shows ripe plum, raspberry, blueberry and blackberry over savoury notes of cracked black pepper, flowering herbs, fresh tarragon and bay leaf. Dark plum, berry compote, rhubarb and raspberry lead into a peppery mid‑palate with vibrant red‑berry acidity and fine‑grained tannins, finishing with lingering mulberry and black pepper. Vegan‑friendly and approachable young, with a few years’ cellaring potential.
