The 2020 Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino follows the path of the 2019, harvested early and fermented with 100% full clusters in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in oak vats and some barrels for 12 to 18 months. It's juicy, powerful and with abundant tannins and a slight earthiness. It's a little more voluptuous and mixes grapes from Angélica (Lunlunta) and some from Nicasia (Altamira). 45,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021. - Luis Gutiérrez

Description

Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino 2020 is the iconic flagship wine of Bodega Catena Zapata, crafted from a selection of pre-phylloxera old Malbec vines from the Angélica Vineyard in Lunlunta and the Nicasia Vineyard in Paraje Altamira, Uco Valley. This cuvée represents the pinnacle of Argentine Malbec, combining the family’s historic vineyards with the expertise of winemaker Alejandro Vigil. Fermented with 20% whole clusters and 80% whole berries using wild yeasts entirely in new French oak barrels (225-500L), followed by 12 to 18 months of aging in barrel, the 2020 vintage delivers a refined and elegant profile with notes of cassis, blackberry, blueberry, violets, dried roses, chocolate and subtle spice. The palate is full-bodied yet remarkably weightless and harmonious, with seamless tannins, vibrant acidity and exceptional length. A powerful yet graceful Malbec that showcases the depth, purity and aging potential of Mendoza’s finest high-altitude terroirs.
