The 2019 Tom Cullity Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec comes from a cool, wet season. While it wasn't as cold or as wet as 2017 before it, it could certainly be grouped in a similar category. And, as people are wont to do, the wines were compared to the great 2018 vintage that came before it and described as being two sides of the same coin—one warm and powerful and the other cool and refined. The truth is, both were excellent years, and this 2019 shows heightened floral perfume, fine tannins and an attractive graphite precision on the palate. Violets, bay leaf, tobacco, nori, dark chocolate and tapenade abound. - Erik Larkin, October 2025

Description

Tom Cullity 2019 is the flagship red of Vasse Felix, a Cabernet Sauvignon (majority) and Malbec blend from the original 1967 vines that established Margaret River Cabernet. Sourced from tiny, concentrated bunches on this historic knoll site, it captures the “calm authority” and quiet power that have become the wine’s hallmark. The nose shows blackcurrant, mulberry and redcurrant with violet, bay leaf, dried herbs, cedar, graphite and subtle tobacco. The palate is medium‑ to full‑bodied yet poised, with vivid fruit wrapped in sleek, ever‑present tannins and refined French oak, leading to a long, elegant, savoury finish. Crafted with meticulous, low‑intervention winemaking and extended maturation in fine barriques, Tom Cullity is the pinnacle of Vasse Felix and a cellar‑worthy expression of Margaret River’s most historic Cabernet terroir.
