The 2020 Aerope Grenache (pronounced air-rope-pee) is from a single vineyard every year—it differs season to season. This year, in Greenock, it's from shallow red loam, ironstone, upon a bedrock of clay. It was put in open fermenters, spent 18 days on the skins, with a portion remaining in stainless steel puncheon, while the remainder went into hogshead and puncheon. It is the first flagship to be bottled each year (this one was bottled in February 2021, meaning it spent nine months in oak, 25% new). On the nose, there is watermelon, cranberry, strawberry and red apple skins. There's a hint of licorice and star anise, although it is faint. In the mouth, this is fresh and spicy, with p[ink peppercorn, Sichuan peppercorn and something red, like cayenne without the heat. This is fine and fleshy, with very little impact of oak, so it feels fresh. It's a lovely wine, very pleasurable. - Erin Larkin, August 2023
Two Hands Aerope Grenache 2020 is a flagship Barossa expression sourced from old, dry‑grown vines, showing Grenache at its most refined. Aromas of red cherry, raspberry and strawberry are wrapped in rose petal, dried herbs and warm spice. The palate is medium‑ to full‑bodied yet graceful, with supple tannins, sweet‑edged red fruit and savoury complexity leading to a long, poised finish. A sophisticated, ageworthy Grenache that will evolve beautifully in bottle.
