96 Points Wine Advocate

The 2017 Scharzhofberger Spätlese AP #6 offers a clear, fine, beautifully ripe and concentrated—though currently pretty closed—bouquet that is still covered by sulfites. Crystalline and mouthfillingly lush and round on the palate, this is a very refined, frisky and playful Riesling with enormous finesse and dancing feather weight on the palate. There are delicate raisin and slate flavors in the aftertaste. This Spätlese has around 71 grams of residual sugar, yet you don’t taste that much of it. - Stephan Reinhardt

Description

The 2017 Scharzhofberger Spätlese (AP #6) from Egon Müller is a refined, still-youthful Mosel classic. The nose is clear, fine and concentrated yet currently somewhat closed, showing ripe stone fruit and delicate raisin notes over cool slate. On the palate it is crystalline, mouthfilling and wonderfully light on its feet: lush and round in texture but frisky and playful, with enormous finesse. Around 71 g/L of residual sugar is perfectly balanced by vivid acidity, so the sweetness feels delicate rather than overt, finishing with lingering raisin and slate nuances. A benchmark Spätlese with outstanding ageing potential.
