The 2023 Lagrange has turned out very well in bottle, opening in the glass with notes of cherries, mulberries and violets, framed by nicely integrated new oak. Medium- to full-bodied, rich and layered, with a charming core of fruit, powdery tannins and lively acids, this is a strong effort from this Saint-Julien property. When Matthieu Bordes arrived at Château Lagrange in 2006, he had the good fortune to take over a vineyard—fully 118 hectares of it—that had been extensively replanted in the 1980s and was just arriving at maturity. Since Suntory acquired this estate in 1983, no expense has been spared, nor has any selection been considered too severe. As the fruits of that investment over the years met Bordes's talents, the results have been exceptional. - William Kelley, April 2026
